fdisk is just one of the applications that they rely on

Sorry to correct you, they do! Ex. I use it all the time to alter
partitions, delete partitions, create partitions... And I would not use
it, if it could not write the new partiton data to the harddisk. :-)

Well, at least it is very easy to ruin the data on the harddrive. And
this is what counts.

indeed it is. My professional advice is:
If you do not have a proper backup of anything and you do not feel 100%
confident that you can do it yourself, better stay away from it. Or have
someone do it who has the experience to do it for you.
