On my Hardy kde4.1 desktop it's kmenu->Favorites>System Settings-> under computer administration click "Keyboard and Mouse" and under the side mouse tab click the radio button to select single click to open files and forders. That's it. If your using gnome desktop the sequence will be different but you may trace it down as it will probably show up in system settings under mouse and keyboard.
