Just got back from town but have noticed that your problem was traced back to a faulty apt sources.list. It's always a good idea to check the sources.list file anytime it's certain a package is in the distro but you can't find it with aptitude show <pkg name> or aptitude search <pkg name>. This means you don't have the required deb mirror in sources list. Caught me several time too. You know that now but this may help someone who doesn't already know it. Also, should have only one version of you listed mirrors.
