Gnome and KDE are not operating systems. They are Desktop Environments which
are a part of an operating system. Ubuntu uses Gnome natively while Kubuntu
uses KDE.You cannot select neither at bootup. It goes without saying that
you won't get to select KDE / Gnome till your computer has booted up
completely and you are presented with a login screen. This login screen
displayed is again a part of KDE/Gnome. You either get to use kdm (kde
display manager) or gdm (gnome display manager). The end result of both
these display managers is the same.. to let you login and to let you select
a desktop environment of your choice.
