You may not get all the programs usually installed with both versions of 
Ubuntu. I would prefer to install the packages ubuntu-desktop and 
kubuntu-desktop. That should include everything needed.

However the selection can't be done at poweron but you have to select the 
session type before you login. Your login manager has a menu to select 
the session type you want to use. If you really want to select it at 
poweron time, you would need a dual boot setup.
