Can grub be installed on a md array?

That's true, but you lose the fault tolerance of having /boot mirrored. 
  Personally, on a production or critical system (even a critical one at 
home), I'd have it mirrored.  (I have 3 servers at home with this setup. 
  But then, of course, I'm paranoid.
