Sound blues are back, phase 2

With the upgrade to the new kernel 2.6.27-7-generic a small part of my
sound functionality has been restored. I can now play a .flac, .mp3 or
.ogg file by opening the music directory and hovering the mouse pointer
over the file. However, I still have no playback using any music
software such as Listen, Movie Player, vlc et al. It is apparent that
the software is trying to play the file, as the visualization runs and
the time changes but no sound is emitted. Curiouser and curiouser......
