While this is perfectly possible, I would nevertheless check, if your 
only IDE Drive really is jumpered to be "Master with no slave present", 
then.

Furthermore you might experience an improvement, if your IDE cable is as 
short as can be. Ex. for single IDE Drives, I routinely use the first 
(of two) connectors for the drive and simply cut away the excess.

On anaother page, roughly the same applies to SATA. I also had nothing 
but trouble with a cheapo SATA cable that came with the Motherboard. 
After using a cable of higher quality, it works like a charm, now
