Is it possible to name a partition?

On my old dual boot (XP/Ubuntu) system I had shared NTFS partitions for
users' data and media files. I formatted the partitions in XP and
labeled/named them appropriately for easy identification.

The names show up in properties, and everywhere else in Gnome and
application programs.

On a new Ubuntu only system, using GParted, I seem to be stuck with a
default partition descriptor that is the size & "Media" (5.4 GB Media,
53.7 GB Media, etc.).

Is there a way to rename these?

If I try to change the name in Properties I get this error message.
**************
The item could not be renamed.
Sorry, couldn't rename "5.4 GB Media" to
"UserData": Operation not supported by backend
