klauncher or trash inassesability???

I am running kubuntu KDE3 and have 2 error messages which I feel strongly are related. I have goggled and posted to diverse groups so far to no avail.
At boot I receive a error box center bottom screen heading
Error-KDE PAR
Malformed URL
System:/
Also I am no longer able to access trash and receive the following:
Could not start process
unable to create io-slave Klauncher
Said: unknown protocol trash
Please advise any options and speculations
