Sound in Intrepid

Just upgraded this laptop to Intrepid(8.10) and so far everything seems
good except for sound. Bringing up the Pulse-audio controls doesn't seem
to help.  Gnome Alsamixer doesn't show anything either. Fortunately this
is only my play machine, not for serious work.
Any others run into the problem of no sound in Intrepid?
