Unless you're doing something exotic (like using your guest as a web
server), try using NAT.  In the vbox settings for my VM, I have
Adapter 0 set as NAT with default settings.  My VM (XP) is set to
obtain IP and DNS via DHCP - and it Just Works... no need for tap,
etc.
