Aha, thanks!  This has changed significantly for the better since the last
time I tried to configure it.  (I especially like the "Never prompt or
start programs on media insertion" box, since that is *exactly* the
behaviour I want.)

I suspected that.  I think I probably removed ubuntu-desktop after the
last distribution upgrade.

Indeed.  I tried that about two years ago and haven't tried it since.
My previous distrust of GUI package management tools betrayed me.

Even to the extent of reinstalling ubuntu-desktop, or should I
manually add that before using the update-manager to do the
distribution upgrade?
