As Karl notes, Tom, you should be prompted for a connection key to
connect to your access point.
You "probably" have the netowrk-manager applet on your Gnome taskbar
in the top left corner. If you do not, hit ALT-F2 and enter "nm-applet
&" sans quotes into the command box. This should fire up the network
manager applet which you can click on to select your access point.
Come back if this presents you with any further issues.
You can additionally run a tail -f /var/log/syslog in a terminal
whilst you attempt to connect to your access point - you'll see the
protocol being negotiated and it will give you some insight into what
the problem is connection to the access point, if any.
