Hi Doug.
First thing. Your mail has arrived in my inbox, perhaps 30mins ago, and shows
as Thursday 03:11:18. May be worth checking your time, and date settings,
unless there has been a terrible delay with your post arriving on the list.
Anyway, back to your sound problems.
Which make, and model of Laptop/PC.
It's worth first opening alsamixer as user on Gnomes terminal. As Ubuntu comes
with Pulseaudio installed, you will no doubt see only one slider. Close
alsamixer using the ESC key, and reopen it as follows, which will show all
sliders for your soundcard, as long as the card has been detected when
booting up.
alsamixer -D hw:0
Some stuff may be muted (the M key toggles mute/unmute), and some sliders like
Master, PCM, Front, CD, may need to be pushed up, if they exist.
Perhaps you could also post a bit of output, as below.
cat /proc/asound/cards
It's probably worth checking in /etc/group, and make sure that your user name
is in the audio group.
All the best.
Nigel.
