$ gnome-font-viewer
usage: gnome-font-viewer fontfile

There is no man page

You might find this entertaining (or not):
[ gnome-font-viewer missing in gnome-control-center]

You might want to try fontforge:

sudo apt-get install fontforge

You'll find it afterwards in Applications|Graphics fontforge-doc
