Karl. The Gmail tab is not "bad"... just not updated yet... When Mozilla 
included GMail support in Thunderbird (in 2.0), Gmail was not offering 
IMAP connections... They added that feature later. Probably next 
Thunderbird version (3.0?) will let you choose... For now, just 
configure your Thunderbird as explained there: 
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77662 (you'll need 
to "adapt" it to Thunderbird for Linux tho (menu entries are different 
from Windows version and Linux version, but dialogs are the same)... 
This isn't really hard...
