Right click on the folder you want to automatically delete emails in.
Select the "Retention Policy" tab.
Click on the "Delete Messages more than xx days old".

I understand you are using IMAP. Using this, the same thing happens on 
"Gmail" as in "Thunderbird" because it *is* the same mail.
