Suggestions rather than fixes....

0 - review /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    I think the mouse stuff is mostly at the start.  Look especially
for lines with EE (error) at the start

1 - look at xorg.conf or post it here

2 - back up the above somewhere, then remove it and start x again and
see what you get

3 - You could try dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

4 - Figure out how to trip that 'xfix' program
