Is the lcd attached to a laptop or is it your only monitor?

In any case you should use xrandr from the command line to probe your X config
to see what resolutions are being reported to X.

I've found http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Xorg_RandR_1.2 to be most helpful in
reconfiguring X from the default setup. Although primarily written for
laptops/external monitors, it should work fine for you.

If you're still having problems, post your hardware setup, xrandr output and
your xorg.conf file.
