I hacked around in those files till my eyes were itching. Finally I just
took Synaptic and purged Compiz and made sure all config files were
gone. Then I restarted Gnome and it ran fine. Re installed Compiz and
everything is copacetic. Sometimes a sledgehammer IS the best tool for
the job.
Many thanks for the help folks, I couldn't do it without.
