Unable to resolve host by name

Connecting two computers on a local network, both running intrepid. Had
this working in 8.04.

The server is media contents of /etc/hosts includes

127.0.0.1 localhost media
127.0.1.1 media

Remote Desktop Preferences on server media

[x}Allow other users to view your desktop
[x]Allow other users to control your desktop

no other restrictions.

When I use "Remote Desktop Viewer" from the client mystic-laptop it finds
"media.local::5900" when I click on connect, the program simply closes with
no error message, just shuts down.

When I use Terminal Server Client to access media using RDP I get the error
"address or service unknown" when I use VNC I get the error message "unable
to resolve host by name".

I know it has to be something simple I'm overlooking, but I've been banging
my head on these keyboards for three days trying to figure it out. What am
I missing?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Bob
