Transferring Files to New Ubuntu System

I have a new Ubuntu 8.04 system; and, I'm trying to transfer files to it 
from my old SuSE 9.2 system.

Ubuntu will mount an external HDD formatted NTFS-3g for Read/Write 
access; but, the SuSE 9.2 system will only mount this for Read Only access.

is there any way around this? if not, what would be the next best way to 
transfer files from an older system to Ubuntu?
