In English it is licence, I would aver. There is a dialect that uses
your spelling alternative, so y'all tok Mayor-Kahn, ah expect. :-)

Wikipedia burbles entertainingly about such differences, even explaining
why the element Aluminium is made to sound like A-loo-me-numb. (My
