I poked around a bit, as I understand it there's no reason another vpn
client (in my case I need pptp) won't work _over_ the wicd connection,
but wicd itself doesn't configure or activate it. The devs have spent
some time on it, but not released a working solution yet. The network
manager vpn plugins (your second link) do state that network manager
has to be managing the connection for them to work.
I will have to get this up and running one way or another in the next
week or so, I'll post what I figure out when its working.
