 I did a lot of experimenting with those *evdev* files and I found one thing
that took me one step forward: I added one line to the above, making it look
like this:
<layout>
  <configItem>
    <name>se-Johnny</name>
    <shortDescription>JR</shortDescription>
    <description>Johnny Rosenberg</description>
    <languageList><iso639Id>swe</iso639Id></languageList>
  </configItem>
</layout>
When clicking *System → Settings → Keyboard → Layouts → +* I can click two
different tabs. With this new addition to the file, I can now find my layout
by clicking the second tab, called *By language*, or something like that
(trying to translate from Swedish). When I click that tab, and then select *
Swedish* as *Language*, *Johnny Rosenberg* is now one of the *Variant*s.
However, Johnny Rosenberg can still not be selected in the first tab, but I
guess I'm not supposed to in Ubuntu 8.10. Or is this a change in Gnome
rather than in Ubuntu?
Anyway, I consider my problem solved now. I guess I have to make my layout a
*Variant* of the *Swedish* layout to be able to see it in the *By Country*tab.
Thanks for reading.
