If you know the model of the lens used by the camera that shot the
picture, you can increase details by correcting the errors caused by the
lens distortion. I don't know if Gimp supports that, but AFAIR BiblePro
supports it, and it's a native Linux application. It's not too
expensive, maybe around the 60-70$ mark, and has many other features
(and some other filters that might help achieve the result you want).
There's also a free trial.

If it's not up to par with the expensive software on Windows, and if
after trying that software yourself you think the effect is working as
they advertise it, you could also try running the software through wine.
 There might also be expensive quality software running on Unix
workstations, actually, and that may run under Linux.
