  From what I've been seeing, the ath5k driver for that chipset is being
more miss than hit, my experience with it gibes with that.  IIRC the OP
was also using an ACER Laptop, which is the make that I have, but in the
53xx model line, where mine is in  the 51xx model line.  I'm not
intending to mislead, but to point out that the mad-wifi is for some,
the valid option.
