One way to test your remote server is to telnet into port 22. Here is 
what I get when I telnet into one of my sshd servers:

$ telnet 12.345.678.90 22
Trying 12.345.678.90...
Connected to 12.345.678.90.
Escape character is '^]'.
SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_4.6

Connection closed by foreign host.
$
