gnome-session: does not restore session - could be "upgrade bug"

I have reported this before but have not yet seen any responses that
worked.   I'm not sure how to diagnose it - gnome-session is a little
odd from what I'm used to.

gnome-session while it seems to save session data, does not restore it.

This COULD be an upgrade issue - as for me it hasn't worked for a long
time.   Suggestions very much welcome.

gnome-session has never worked for me on several systems using ubuntu
intrepid.   Worked perfectly on older ubuntu.
I miss having my software re-open automatically (especially the 9+ 
gnome-terminals that I
leave open on current working code directories).
.. I'm not even sure how to verify that it saves the session.   I've
seen no error reported, even saving session manually.
It could even be a permissions problem - but I doubt it.
