Firefox problem on 8.04

sometime in the past week, Firefox died on 8.04.  Symptoms are it wakes up with
a completely white screen, bookmarks have vanished, the next page/back page
icons are grayed out.  When you type in a URL, the page is rendered but the only
way to navigate is via links on the page or typing in a new URL.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but with no luck.   Any ideas?
