Sorry, wrong TLA. I meant LTS = Linux Terminal Server, not LTS = Long

Machine is Intel D865GBFLK motherboard, Intel Pentium 4 3.4E GHz CPU,
Corsair XMS 1 GB dual channel DDR400 memory, and Western Digital WD800JB
hard drive (whole disk, encrypted LVM).
FYI I recall that *.wmv files played smoothly, but certain *.mpg files
were jerky. I suspected a subtle video codec incompatibility (possibly
on the encoding end), and thought I'd try the Dragon player to see if it
fared any better.
I agree that my multimedia is broken. The questions are:
1. Why are the audio and video players broken?
2. How do I fix them?
