two desktops

The new xrandr stuff is very nice and makes it MUCH easier to get a
second screen going. I got my external 1280x1024 monitor working with
very little difficulty in what I think of as xinerama mode - one big
screen spread across two monitors.

However, what I'd *really* like (it's never enough, is it!) is a second,
independent desktop on the second monitor - i.e., a desktop with its own
panels and icons and so on.

I had such a set up on Feisty, but I had to do a lot of editing of
xorg.conf to get it. I had to set up separate screens and so on.

Is there a simple way to get two desktops on Hardy? I do know how to do
it the hard way, I'm just hoping that there's an easier way...

Regards, K.
