Problem is: .profile is not loaded for the GUI session, so any apps you
launch from the GNOME menus won't see your changes.
For a long time I had a ~/.gnomerc which set a couple of environment
variables. This one works for all GNOME sessions. The syntax is the
same as ~/.profile, only be very careful about introducing errors (or
using bashisms), as those will prevent you from logging in.
