Linux uses quota which is neither installed nor configured by default
under Ubuntu.
Is it mentioned in your /etc/fstab?

I've written and requested a clarification. It turns out if I go this route, I'll probably use VMWare, anyway, because it's what the guy who'll be administering it knows how to do, and he has a number of other vmware servers, but it costs nothing to ask :-)

My reading of the page you cited was that that definitely wouldn't work.

I'd wondered. I've never encountered a username with a dot in it - I guess, that's also POSIX, but what crazy standards committee permitted _that_?
Anyway, in future I _will_ try to use colons, but the man page is still, if not wrong, deficient.

Did that too.
I locked up my computer twice messing with this. Thanks but I think I
will give up on this.

I would suggest finding a way to network or get a USB drive to store the
image and seeing if partimage will work (using a disk like Rescue Is
Possible, RIP) to create the image file...we use a procedure with RIP to
copy lab drives. SATA drive controllers can be iffy in whether Partimage
will see the drive, though.
DD is also an option, but the resulting image can be big unless you look
up coupling it with gzip.
And if you think you'll ever need to copy the data somewhere, makes sure
you get and check md5sums of the resulting datafile.

ddrescue, maybe? dd can have problems if there are bad spots on a drive,
and I thought I saw that if the bad spots are "marked" by the controller
it can still have problems but I'm not sure. I just know that ddrescue
was made to work like dd but has some intelligence in "rescanning"
certain spots.

I've just down loaded the alternate CD for Intrepid and tried to install
it on my Dell GX260. I'm using the alternate CD as I want to use the
logical volume manager.
It goes through the install process and then at some point asks me to
insert the release candidate disk into the CD-ROM drive. The dialogue
stays on the screen if I select continue or 'go back' and I am then stuck.
Any ideas?

Um...it's called a user quota. Windows has it now. Unix has had it
for...what,...forty years?
There are definitely ways to limit user disk usage.
Then again...users can do it by doing something like sticking their home
directory on a physical 20 gig drive and the system on a 120 gig drive
and wonder why their home is limited to 20 gig...that's kind of an easy
way to enforce a quota.

It looks like you have a 15 gig partition. Where were you getting the
700 meg home directory limit?

Sounds like time to file a bug report in launchpad. If that is the
final version, it should never ask for the release candidate CD.

hello
i am running an ubuntu 8.04 with fluxbox. since installing lamp during the
installation of ubuntu returned an error i tried to install lamp with sudo
tasksel, but once i select the required software it returns just an error
which says tasksel:aptitude failed (100)
can somebody help me
