Interesting, because that says you're trying to compile with a Hardy 
kernel...

Ugh.  gdebi has always been unreliable for me, but you should have 
mentioned _which_ VirtualBox you tried to install

Reboot with the new kernel.  It's right there in Grub .  Installs don't 
delete the old kernel, just in case you can't boot the new one for some 
reason.

Grub contains a menu of available kernels - and for you to be booting 
into 2.6.24 you have to be telling it to do so.  Post your 
/boot/grub/menu.lst.
