My reading of the page you cited was that that definitely wouldn't work.

I'd wondered.  I've never encountered a username with a dot in it - I guess, that's also POSIX, but what crazy standards committee permitted _that_?

Anyway, in future I _will_ try to use colons, but the man page is still, if not wrong, deficient.
