cant contact ldap server

hello

i have a ubuntu server installed with ldap server and an ldap client on
another ubuntu server machine. i have installed and configured all the
necessary files.

but wen i try to contact ldap frmo the server it says

 ldap_sasl_bind(SIMPLE): Can't contact LDAP server (-1)

i am looking for a feasible solution to overcome this error

even the /etc/init.d/slapd restart responds with a failure

i also got this while debugging
