Can't really comment intelligently as I'm not that familiar with Compiz. I had just installed it for a few days and enabled Desktop Effects recently also. All I know is that going back to the first radio button in Desktop Effects and purging all Compiz simply got ALT-F2 working again. All this happened after I quit playing around with nvidia restricted drivers after getting a stable native resolution of 1680x1050.
