Thanks for the googling I should have done myself. I checked it out but didn't register for kde as they insist on small case, upper case and numbers in my user name and password. What a PITA.  Maybe later. I did see where it suggested rming my .kde4 dir which I didn't have to do as purging Compiz and related software fixed it for me. Now to figure out how to use KWin for desktop effects. Man kwin is first stop I guess.-:)
