FWIW, ddclient works here with an /etc/ddclient.conf like this:

daemon=300
syslog=yes
pid=/var/run/ddclient.pid
protocol=dyndns2
use=web, web=checkip.dyndns.com/, web-skip='IP Address' 
server=members.dyndns.org
login=mylogin-name
password='mypassword'
personal.domain.name


And in /etc/default/ddclient :

run_ipup="false"
run_daemon="true"
daemon_interval="300"
