problems with VLC and Totem playing image on external monitor

My external monitor correctly shows firefox and other programs but when I
try to play a CD in both VLC and Totem the it plays correctly on the
internal monitor but only shows the window of the video player program on
the external monitor.   The sound does transfer to the external monitor (an
hd tv)

The video card (integrated on the motherboard)an ATI Mobile Radeon 9000"
installed on a Dell inspiron 600m.

Any suggestions?
