    Interesting. I have both VLC and Totem working. When I tried to use 
Totem it popped up a mystery thing that said it would be best if you 
installed the non-Ubuntu stuff. I did and now Totem and VLC can look at 
everything but movies.

    I find it hard to understand why Totem is called The Movie Player 
and it can't play a movie! Makes Ubuntu look stupid :-)
