Cannot access any samba shares since Hardy upgrade

Hello

I've just completed the hellish* task of upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04.

Since Hardy got rid of smbfs my Kubuntu desktop is no longer any use on
our network because I cannot mount the shares I need.

I think this is because of this bug:
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5151

which was reported in December 2007 (but no action as yet).

(How) can I downgrade samba to the Feisty version? Do I have to
downgrade the kernel also?

thanks

Rich.

*hellish: the nice gui process hung the machine, and left loads of
packages broken mid-state: you can't remove them without installing them
and you can't install them because they're broken... Got there in the
end with a million attempts at dpkg and apt-get! Just now wish I hadn't!
