Ubuntu won't recognise usb drive when running KDE. (works under gnome)

I know - that's what I'm doing at the moment - I just find it easier if 
the machine is set up to do tasks like this automatically. Isn't that 
what computers are supposed to be for (among other things) - automating 
repetitive and mechanisable processes?

What I want is to have it set up so that any device is mounted under 
/media with a consistent filename derived from its filesystem title. 
This worked fine when I was using gnome, and I don't see why switching 
desktop should have broken this.
