Google Earth only works as "sudo"

I downloaded from Google and installed it fine.  All went nicely except that when it said there was a new version, it 
apparently never got it.  I still have the old version.  It works super fast (as compared to using it on windows XP).

BUT there is still an issue....   when the cursor of not on the image it's great, and well defined.  However, when I put the 
cursor over the image, then all the individual images begin flickering uncontrollably...   until I move the cursor off the 
image and then it is still.  (is it ticklish?)

What can I do to steady the image?  I've tried safe graphics mode within the program and that doesn't help.
