It is unclear to whom you replied, because you did not quote anything
and because your MS Outlook broke the thread. The list etiquette helps

Also, compiling drivers from the project's official source yourself
should be the last resort, and I am not sure that it is sound advice in
this case (partly because it is unclear at whom it is directed).
Considering that the alsa version in Ubuntu 8.04 is 1.0.16-0ubuntu4, I
doubt that compiling that same version from the offical source makes a
positive contribution.
