I have a very close cousin to that card (the 8600GTS) in my workstation
in the office running 8.04. Compiz and all other eye candy simply flies
and frame rates in 3D games[1] are very good considering how much we
didn't spend on it (cost approx USD$100 6 months ago). My advice is
give it a shot and if you're not happy, talk t up on eBay - you'll get
your money back :D

HTH,

James
[1] 3D games in an office? you ask - yep: Friday afternoon network
Quake3 and beers all round. Heck - what else can an operations
department do with high-spec machines a Gigabit ethernet?!? ;)

see http://people.ubuntu.com/~ogra/classmate/images/hardy/ it has the
ubuntu hardy image specifically tailored for the classmate 2G and 4G USB
machine. install instructions are on the above page as well.

feel free to mail me if you run into any problems. i'm about to set up a
launchpad product for it to track non application specific bugs as well
as having a cmpc-users and -developers mailing lists within the next two
weeks. note that the image is not 100% final yet and might still see
rebuilds with updated packages from hardy-updates.

the actual final image is to be expected for the 8.04.1 release in july.

Hi, thanks very much for this, because I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 and each time I

start the system I get prompted to log in with my username and password.
Since I'm the only user on this machine, I'd rather let it log in for me
without prompting. Thanks again, and take care.

Hi, the "install inside of Windows" feature is to do with Wubi, which allows

you to install Ubuntu in Windows. This is how I installed Ubuntu. I'll try
the live CD when I have time as I've got to make my own CD first.

Hi all, what are all these blank messages that has "re:[ot]" in the subject
lines? I'm sorry if this is off topic, but no doubt people who'll be viewing

this message using Evolution or some other Ubuntu-based e-mail client will
have seen these as well. Thanks!

Ubuntu Users,

My laptop has been showing errors while booting up ever since I upgraded
to Hardy Heron.

I think these are to do with my WiFi network hardware, since getting
WiFi connections has become unstable since the upgrade.

Of course I looked this up on the web, but when I try to look up
nlm_udport, Google suggests I should be looking up "nlm_udpport", which
I don't know if it's the same thing. Is it?

Here are the errors I'm seeing:

May 18 10:02:45 dave-laptop kernel: [ 30.443265] lockd: Unknown
parameter `nlm_udport'
May 18 10:02:45 dave-laptop kernel: [ 30.449331] nfs: Unknown symbol

get_nfs_grace_period
May 18 10:02:45 dave-laptop kernel: [ 30.779344] nfsd: Unknown symbol
nlmsvc_ops

Any idea what these are related to?

I agree that a GUI interface _in_addition_to_ a text-based interface
would be ideal. However, if it's one or the other, I firmly believe
that text-based is preferable.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?

I didn't know Evolution was a "Ubuntu-based" email client.... :-)

FWIW, I'm not seeing any blank messages...
