I would not be surprised if Windows's own handling of NTFS is more
sophisticated than Ubuntu's. It's their own FS after all. And Ubuntu
certainly pops up a message that tells you that unplugging without
unmount is wrong, when you try it. There is a reason for that, too.
The solution to your problem is to properly unmount the drive in Windows
(click the icon in the notification area of Windows's taskbar)
