the only thing I can think of is booting a different kernel maybe??
(edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to show list of kernels at boot time, you'll
see what I mean if you look at the file) I had atheros card problems
several times during hardy development and tried different kernels until
I found one that worked!

You ruled out the alt f2 or whatever key combo it was that turned
wireless on and off right?
